Personal Development

What is Personal Development?

Personal development is about nurturing the whole child – developing character, well-being, resilience and social responsibility alongside academic success. It runs through every aspect of school life: PSHE lessons, the wider curriculum, assemblies, enrichment activities and extra-curricular clubs.

What is the aim of Personal Development?

Our aim is to ensure that every pupil grows into a confident, kind, resilient and responsible individual who is well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school.

We provide a broad range of experiences that help children develop their character, wellbeing, independence and understanding of the world around them. We encourage children to build positive relationships, celebrate diversity, make informed choices and contribute positively to our school and wider community.

We want every child to feel safe, valued and inspired to achieve their full potential, developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to flourish both now and in the future.

How do we deliver Personal Development?

Expert input –  We enrich our curriculum by welcoming a range of visitors who share their expertise and experiences with our pupils. These include authors, artists, athletes, emergency services, local community groups and other specialists. Their visits inspire children, broaden their aspirations, and deepen their understanding of the world, helping them make meaningful connections between their learning and real-life experiences.

Trips and visits – Educational visits are an important part of our personal development offer. We provide opportunities for pupils to explore places of historical, geographical, cultural and scientific interest, bringing learning to life beyond the classroom. Through local visits, residential experiences, museums, places of worship, theatres, and outdoor learning, children develop independence, confidence, resilience, curiosity and an appreciation of the wider world.

Leadership – We believe every child should have the opportunity to develop leadership skills and make a positive contribution to school life. Pupils are encouraged to take on roles such as Junior Leadership Team, Eco Council members, House Captains, Playground Leaders, Digital Leaders, Librarians and Junior Road Safety Officer. These responsibilities help children develop confidence, communication, teamwork, decision-making and a strong sense of responsibility while ensuring that pupil voice plays an active role in shaping our school community.

Enrichment opportunities - We offer a wide range of enrichment opportunities that enable children to discover new interests, develop talents and build essential life skills. Through clubs, sporting competitions, music lessons, performance opportunities, gardening, STEM activities, charity events, cultural celebrations, assemblies and themed curriculum days, pupils are encouraged to challenge themselves, work collaboratively and develop resilience and creativity. These experiences help children become well-rounded individuals who are prepared for future success and lifelong learning.

Our Values and British Values

Across the school pupils reflect on our core values of generosity, confidence, determination, trust, compassion, positivity and respect. These values are displayed around the school and underpin our approach to learning and relationships.

Alongside this, we actively support Fundamental British Values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law and mutual respect and tolerance.

Safeguarding and Personal Development

Personal development also supports pupil’s emotional well-being and equips them with strategies to stay safe. We ensure that our ensure that our approach aligns with statutory guidance for PSHE, SMSC and personal development.

The Ofsted framework highlights Personal Development as a crucial area of growth. We take this responsibility seriously by ensuring our environment is inclusive, safe, and endlessly encouraging. We ensure every child discovers their unique voice and realises their potential. At Steeple Claydon, we want to send our pupils into the world as kind, capable, and courageous individuals.
