At Steeple Claydon Primary School, we believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom. While we are incredibly proud of the curriculum we provide during the school day, we also recognise the importance of giving children opportunities to discover new interests, develop talents, build confidence, work collaboratively with others and, most importantly, have fun.
Our extra-curricular clubs form an important part of our commitment to developing the whole child. Throughout the year, we offer a varied programme of clubs led by members of our school staff, who generously volunteer their time and expertise to provide additional experiences for our pupils.
Our club programme changes from term to term, allowing us to offer a broad range of experiences and respond to children's interests and staff expertise. Clubs may include:
⚽ Sport and physical activity – including football, tag rugby and other team sports
🎨 Creative activities – such as art, crafting and creating
📚 Reading and books – encouraging children to develop a love of reading
🎲 Games and social activities – including board and card games
🍳 Cooking and practical activities
🌳 Outdoor learning and Forest School
🎶 Music and performance opportunities, including our Young Voices provision
➕ Curriculum enrichment, including additional opportunities in subjects such as mathematics
The clubs available will vary each term, meaning that children have the opportunity to experience different activities as they progress through the school.
At the beginning of each term, we share the available clubs with parents and carers. Families are then able to indicate which clubs their child would like to attend, in order of preference.
Places on some clubs are limited, so we carefully manage allocations to ensure that opportunities are shared as fairly as possible. Our aim is for every child to have the opportunity to participate in at least one extra-curricular club during the academic year.
Children can participate in up to three school-run clubs per term.
Where demand is greater than the number of available places, we will endeavour to ensure that children who have not been successful in securing a place have opportunities to attend a club in a future term.
Our clubs are generally organised according to age group:
KS1 clubs – Years 1 and 2
KS2 clubs – Years 3, 4, 5 and 6
The availability of clubs for particular year groups can change from term to term. Reception children may not initially have access to the full club programme while they settle into school life, with opportunities introduced as appropriate.
Some clubs may also have specific entry requirements or be offered by invitation, selection or trial, depending on the nature of the activity.
In addition to our school-run clubs, S4A provide two after-school sports clubs each week, on Mondays and Thursdays.
These clubs provide additional opportunities for children to develop their sporting skills, teamwork, confidence and enjoyment of physical activity. S4A's provision is particularly valuable in helping us to extend the range of opportunities available to our pupils.
Our extra-curricular programme would not be possible without the commitment of our staff. Many of our teachers and support staff give up their own time to run clubs because they want to provide our children with experiences and opportunities beyond the school curriculum.
We are incredibly grateful for their enthusiasm, creativity and willingness to go above and beyond for the children of Steeple Claydon.
